Agenda: Femcast – Growing stronger with data // creciendo con los datos

this event proposes a shared listening to the data femcasts recorded and produced onsite the THF.  throughout the convergence participants are invited to have recorded data conversations and imagine better relations to and through data. the conversations will be clustered or free flowing around topics such as care, consent, extraction, cyborgisation, sci fi, commons, privacy, healing, servers/services, policies, participation and many more. this will be a space for different feminist perspectives on data [conceptualisations] and the ways they hold us back or let us grow.

este evento propone una escucha compartida de los femcasts de datos grabados y producidos en el THF. a lo largo de la convención se invita a los participantes a mantener conversaciones grabadas sobre datos e imaginar mejores relaciones con y a través de los datos. las conversaciones se agruparán o fluirán libremente en torno a temas como el cuidado, el consentimiento, la extracción, la ciborgización, la ciencia ficción, los bienes comunes, la privacidad, la curación, los servidores/servicios, las políticas, la participación y muchos más. este será un espacio para diferentes perspectivas feministas sobre los datos [conceptualizaciones] y las formas en que nos frenan o nos permiten crecer.

Agenda: Encontrarnos en la virtualidad: una investigación sobre la creación de espacios (más) seguros en internet

Durante el curso 2021/2022 realicé un trabajo de investigación vinculado a la Universidad de La Laguna (Islas Canarias) sobre la construcción de espacios (más) seguros en internet, desde una perspectiva (trans)feminista e interseccional. A través de 5 informantes indagué en las estrategias que las comunidades están desarrollando para conformar espacios (más) seguros en internet, o al menos intentarlo, en este contexto de pandemia mundial que nos exigió virtualidad.

En esta sesión compartiré brevemente los resultados obtenidos con la intención de devolver a la comunidad el conocimiento compartido. Sería muy enriquecedor escuchar las voces y experiencias de las asistentes al THF para seguir ampliando las estrategias, reflexiones y aprendizajes.

*Avance de los resultados: la mayoría de las estrategias que describieron las compañeras tenían que ver con cuestiones relativas a los cuidados, la accesibilidad, la construcción de confianza, el acompañamiento en el uso de tecnología etc. y poco con cuestiones tecnológicas (aunque también).

Comenzamos con un breve ejercicio para entender qué significaba para nosotres construir espacios más seguros en línea:

1. ¿Qué consideras esencial para que un espacio se considere seguro?

  • Confiar en el proveedor de infraestructura.
  • Saber de qué se trata.
  • Claridad/transparencia.
  • Anonimato/pseudoanonimato posible.
  • Saber quién es el administrador del sistema.
  • Protección de la privacidad.

  • Equilibrio entre seguridad y aceptabilidad (que la gente utilice el servicio).

Debate

Hay una diferencia entre security and safety, aunque en catellano se use la misma palabra. La tecnologia que es más accesible, por lo general, está ofrecidda por empresas, y es software privativo. Muchas aplicaciones seguras de mensajería no funcionan con los lectores de celulares.

El tema de la accesibilidad también hace que la información sea accesible a las empresas, así que hay una tensión ahí.

La gente que Martu entrevistó era muy clara en que se sentía cómoda en plataformas como Zoom, que en términos técnicos es de las plataformas menos segura. Por eso tenemos que trabajar en la idea de seguridad. Los espacios que la gente siente más comodos y confortables, normalmente son los más inseguros. Si hablas de una plataforma como BBB, instalada en un servidor autónomo, ellas no se sienten seguras, porque es como una casa nueva.

Quizá sea un problema de la interfaz. Cuando se ve una interfaz que no está pulida, no genera seguridad. Las BigTech trabajan mucho en la interfaz para favorecer esa idea de seguridad.

Silvia Rivera Qusicanqui explica el capitalismo ha sido muy bueno engañándonos con la idea de comodidad, que nos ha quitado la posibilidad de dominio de las herramietnas. Parece que la comodidad es la herramienta más segura pero en realidad nos está arrebatando las herramietnas de la autogestión. Preferimos subrrogar servicios que autogestionarlos.

Cuando hablamos de seguridad quizas tenemos que preguntarnos: ¿de qué queremos protegernos? ¿De la vigilancia? ¿Del Covid? ¿De la discriminación? Porque de eso dependerán las herramientas y plataformas que usemos.

A veces la construcción de espacios virtuales nos facilita tener conversaciones que en persona nos cuesta mas (porque nos que lejos, por la violencia, por el autoritarismo digital en nuestro país, etc.). Incluso, hay conversaciones que como persona trans o no binaria no podemos tener, incluso en espacios que se autodenominan feministass/espacios seguros.

We started with a short exercise to understand what it meant to us to build safer spaces online:

3. What are the challenges in building safe spaces?

  • Toxic groups dynamics.
  • Understandable and accessible privacy policies.
  • Lack of free software platforms.
  • Usability (accessibility).
  • Poor internet connection.
  • To find such a place (very few exist).
  • Legal boundaries.
  • Language gaps.
  • Balance between security and acceptability (have people use the service).

Debate

There is a difference between security and safety, although, in Spanish, the same word is used. The technology that is most accessible is usually offered by companies and is proprietary software. Many secure messaging applications do not work with cell phone readers.

The accessibility issue also makes information accessible to companies, so there is tension there.

The people Martu interviewed were very clear that they felt comfortable on platforms like Zoom, which in technical terms, is one of the least secure platforms. That’s why we have to work on the idea of security. The spaces where people feel most comfortable are usually the most insecure. If you talk about a platform like BBB installed on a standalone server, they don’t feel safe because it’s like a new house.

Maybe it’s an interface problem. When you see an interface that is not polished, it doesn’t generate security. BigTech works a lot on the interface to promote this idea of security.

Silvia Rivera Qusicanqui explains that capitalism has been very good at deceiving us with the idea of comfort, which has taken away the possibility of mastering the tools. It seems that comfort is the safest tool, but in reality, it is taking away the tools of self-management. We prefer to outsource services rather than self-manage them.

When we talk about security, perhaps we have to ask ourselves: what do we want to protect ourselves from? From surveillance? From Covid? From discrimination? Because that is what the tools and platforms we use will depend on.

Sometimes the construction of virtual spaces makes it easier for us to have conversations that are more difficult to have in person (because we are far away, because of violence, because of digital authoritarianism in our country, etc.). There are even conversations that, as trans or non-binary people, we cannot have, even in spaces that call themselves feminist/safe spaces.

 

Recommendations to create a more accessible digital space

  • Check that the platform can be used with the most popular screen readers (JAWS and NVDA for desktop, VoiceOver for iOS, Voice Assistant for Android).
  •  Provide alternative text for images and video.
  • Remember that when you share your screen the content is not available to screen readers, so make sure to provide proper description of the content or share alternative content.
  • Provide subtitles for videos.
  • Provide audio description in videos in which visual content is relevant.
  • Consider using platforms which provide quality automatic subtitles.
  • Provide sign language interpretation.
  • Avoid acronyms or words that are not able to read outloud.
  • Provide easy to read texts, with short and simple sentences, to reach wide audiences, specifically those without formal education. Consider providing easy reading versions.
  • Make pauses at least every 45/50 minutes.
  • We discourage the use of music that compromises the use of screen readers.
  • Do not cover your mouth while speaking to facilitate lip reading.
  • Speak at a moderate pace to facilitate interpretation, subtitling and, in general, favor understanding.
  • Prioritize the use of platforms that do not required extensive data use, for people with poor connection or scarce resources.
  • Make this accessibility recommendations available to the participants at the begging of the session.
  • Ask participants in advance whether they have any requirements that haven’t been considered beforehand.

Checklist to consider when creating safer spaces.

Essential

  • Take your time to introduce the features of the platform soy participants get familiarized.
  • Explain the reasons why you chose this platform and not other.
  • Make sure you have the support of a technical team.
  • Provide a policy for the space, that at least contains:
    • Expressions, jokes, comments or contents that are sexist, transphobic, LGTBphobic, racist, ableist, classits, fat-shammIng, etc., are not allowed.
    • Violent actions, harassment or sexual harassment are not allowed.
    • Promote good accessibility practices.
    • Recommend the use of trigger warnings for sensible content.
    • Prevent people with more privileges from monopolizing the participation.
    • Make explicit the ways to report policy noncompliance.
    • Make explicit the consequences of policy noncompliance.

Algunas de las herramientas que se suelen necesitar en una comunidad son wikis, sitio web, gestión de tareas, listas de correo, foros, etc.

En Calafou utilizamos diferentes herramientas, pero los datos no son muy portables entre ellas y sobre todo, no hay gestión de versiones.

Gitlab podría proporcionarnos muchas de ellas, además de ofrecer control de versiones para wikis y repositorios e hitos para las tareas. Sólo que no es tan fácil de configurar y requeriría un hardware más potente del que tenemos.En este taller nos gustaría compartir experiencias de otros participantes con estas herramientas y si hay energía y hardware, configurar Gitlab u otras herramientas para documentación.

Some of the tools that are usually needed in a community are wikis, web site, task management, mailing lists, forums, etc.

In Calafou we use different tools, but the data is not very portable between them and above all, there is no version management.Gitlab co uld provide us with many of them, besides providing version control for wikis and repositories and milestones for tasks. Only it is not so easy to configure and would require more powerful hardware than we have.

Agenda: Break the petri_hiphas spread

break the petri_hyphas spread es un taller de transfers y reproducción experimental de micelios*: la idea es romper con los protocolos asépticos propios del cultivo en laboratorio para ensayar técnicas experimentales de cultivo y reproducción de organismos mutantes**.

BTP_HS es una propuesta para repensar los entornos (y las relaciones) de las prácticas de cultivo a partir de las necesidades y deseidades de lxs hongos (pero también de lxs otrxs microorganismos que lxs acompañanan). A tal próposito, experimentaremos con recetas de sustratos (alimento) y con el diseño de contenedores que puedan reproducir las condiciones de crecimiento fuera de las dimensiones normativas de la petri dish. La práctica nos servirá también como starter para especular sobre las relaciones interespecie que construímos con nuestros cultivos, y todxs sus acompañantes, desde una perspectiva menos antropocentrica e instrumentalizadora.

Agenda: Talk & Roundtable Discussion – Digital Change Transfeminisms In Digital Art Practice (2000-2022)

This event wishes to explore digital change transfeminisms in current digital art practice. A vital contribution of these digital change movements is crystallised in the connections that these movements draw between the social realities and the digital environments they create. These movements show that the digital environments and the technologies that drive them are not passive or value-neutral; instead, they reflect broader real-life social exclusions. As a result, the design is actively shaped and pre-conditioned to who will inhabit or use them.

Driving this forward are transfeminist artists using digital art practices to change the binary systems, which parallels the heteronormative structure of these patriarchal systems. Using a feminist lens, we can see different digital art practices that aim to be nonhierarchical and inclusive and use tools to bypass the patriarchy. The art practice itself reformulates the digital and questions the masculated systems. Under the umbrella of new digital change feminisms, many artists are changing the technology paradigms, metaphorically and literally rewriting the code.

Esta guía es el resultado de más de un año de trabajo en la_bekka, el espacio hackfeminista de la Eskalera Karakola (EKKA), una casa pública transfeminista -antigua casa okupa- de la ciudad de Madrid. Desde finales del año 2017 nos juntamos semanalmente para aprender, compartir y montar nuestra infraestructura digital. Unos meses más tarde, en marzo de 2018, nos reunimos un grupo de servidoras feministas en Calafou para conocernos y pensar juntas qué significaba construir infraestructura feminista. Pensamos en las máquinas (digitales y analógicas) y en código y conexiones. Pero también pensamos en nosotras, en nuestros cuerpos, nuestras relaciones, nuestros tiempos. Tratamos de identificar qué es aquello que sostiene nuestras prácticas: el aire, el cariño, la electricidad, la empatía, el descanso. Al día de hoy todavía seguimos pensando.

De regreso, en Madrid, vimos que en la EKKA había máquinas viejas de proyectos de años anteriores así que hicimos un poco de arqueología informática. Revisamos todos los equipos que encontramos, reciclamos los que pudimos y nos deshicimos de los demás (llevándolos al punto limpio). Exploramos viejos discos duros y encontramos memorias de quienes habían transitado el espacio antes que nosotras. Respaldamos todo porque lo que se borra se olvida y la memoria alimenta el corazón de nuestro movimiento.

Finalmente montamos una servidora web utilizando los recursos que teníamos a mano y que pensamos que eran fácilmente accesibles. Para el hardware elegimos una Raspberri Pi, una pequeña máquina de bajo costo al alcance de muchas y con recursos suficientes para alojar una web. Es verdad que no todas tenemos la posibilidad de hacernos con una. No importa, podemos seguir las instrucciones de esta guía usando una laptop vieja, una computadora de escritorio que armamos con partes a lo Frankenstein.

Otra de las ventajas de usar una Raspberry Pi es su bajo consumo energético. Aunque varíe según los servicios que esté corriendo, el consumo eléctrico promedio para nuestra servidora será de unos 3 watts por hora, lo que nos da un consumo mensual de 2,15 kilowatts si la tenemos prendida todo el día. Así que por más cara que esté la electricidad en donde vivan no creemos que supere el dólar mensual. También usaremos Raspbian, una distribución de GNU/Linux desarrollada para Raspberri Pi; Apache, porque es un servidor web con mucha documentación y algunas ya lo conociamos un poco; y Jekyll, un generador de sitios estáticos que reduce la cantidad de recursos necesarios para funcionar.

Estas fueron nuestras elecciones a partir de lo que teníamos. Pero también pueden remplazar estas opciones por otras a partir de lo que ustedes tengan a mano o con lo que quieran experimentar. Pueden usar una máquina de escritorio o laptop vieja, pueden elegir usar Debian u también optar por nGinx para su servidora. Todo es posible y de eso se trata: que hagamos nuestras propias elecciones y aprendamos en el camino.

This guide results from more than a year of work in la_bekka, the hackfeminist space of Eskalera Karakola (EKKA), a transfeminist public house -former squat- in the city of Madrid. Since the end of 2017, we have met weekly to learn, share and set up our digital infrastructure. A few months later, in March 2018, we met a group of feminist servants in Calafou to get to know each other and think together about what it meant to build feminist infrastructure. We thought about machines (digital and analogue) and code and connections. But we also thought about ourselves, our bodies, our relationships, and our times. We tried to identify what sustains our practices: air, affection, electricity, empathy, and rest. To this day, we are still thinking.

Back in Madrid, we saw that EKKA had old machines from previous projects, so we did a bit of computer archaeology. We went through all the equipment we found, recycled the ones we could and got rid of the rest (taking them to the clean point). We explored old hard drives, and we found memories of those who had been in the space before us. We backed everything up because what is erased is forgotten, and memory feeds the heart of our movement.

Finally, we set up a web server using the resources we had on hand and that we thought were easily accessible. For the hardware, we chose a Raspberri Pi, a small, low-cost machine within reach of many and with enough resources to host a web. It is true that not all of us have the possibility to get one. No matter, we can follow the instructions in this guide using an old laptop, a desktop computer that we put together with Frankenstein-like parts.

Another advantage of using a Raspberry Pi is its low power consumption. Although it varies depending on the services it is running, the average power consumption for our server will be about 3 watts per hour, which gives us a monthly consumption of 2.15 kilowatts if we have it on all day. So no matter how expensive electricity is where you live, we don’t think it will be more than a dollar a month. Everything is possible, and that’s what it’s all about: that we make our own choices and learn along the way.

Agenda: Licencia Feminista de Pares: conocimiento colectivo y sostenibilidad de iniciativas transfeministas

La Licencia Feminista de Pares (F2F), un fork de la Licencia de Producción de Pares, nos permite liberar el conocimiento y promover la sostenibilidad financiera de colectivas y redes que se organizan bajo principios feministas. En este espacio debatiremos sobre la definición de la licencia y sus alcances, y su utilidad para la producción colectiva de conocimiento transfeminista libre.

En la sesión discutimos los fundamentos para crear la Licencia Feminista de Pares (F2F) de Atribución – Compartir Igual – Feminista No Capitalista.

Entendíamos que usándo esta licencia contribuiríamos a la sostenibilidad económica de los proyectos transfeministas al permitir que nuestras obras fueras explotadas comercialmente por colectivas que se organizaran bajo principios transfeministas.

Es decir, la explotación comercial de las obra sólo está permitida a cooperativas, organizaciones y colectivos sin fines de lucro, y organizaciones de trabajadoras autogestionadas, que se identifiquen y organicen bajo principios feministas. Todo excedente o plusvalía obtenidos por el ejercicio de los derechos concedidos por esta licencia sobre la obra debe ser reinvertidos en la lucha contra el patriarcado y el capitalismo.

Se discutió en la sesión la necesidad de actualizar el logotipo de la licencia, ampliar los principios antirracistas, justicia migratoria y ecología.

Se propuso la idea de hacer un repositorio que permita subir y buscar obras liberadas bajo la F2F. Así, tendremos acceso a un repositorio que, con una estrategia de apoyo mutuo, permitirá a otras compañeras inmprimir, vender, reproducir, hacer obras derivadas , etc.

Se buscan voluntarias para traducir la licencia a otros idiomas.

In the session we discussed the basis for creating the Feminist Peer to Peer (F2F) Attribution – Share Alike – Feminist Non-Capitalist License.

We understood that by using this license we would contribute to the economic sustainability of transfeminist projects by allowing our works to be commercially exploited by collectives organising under transfeminist principles.

That is to say, commercial exploitation of this work is only permitted to cooperatives, non-profit organisations and collectives, and self-managed workers’ organisations, which identify and organise themselves under feminist principles. Any surplus or surplus value obtained from the exercise of the rights granted by this licence on the work must be reinvested in the struggle against patriarchy and capitalism.

The session discussed the need to update the logo of the licence, to expand the anti-racism, migrant justice and ecology principles.

The idea of a repository to upload and search for works released under F2F was proposed. In this way, we will have access to a repository that, with a strategy of mutual support, will allow other colleagues to print, sell, reproduce, make derivative works, etc.

We are looking for volunteers to translate the licence into other languages.
